Hopi Third Mesa
Circa 1950
Hopi Third Mesa wicker basketry is an art, unique in its process and in its colorful designs.
A revered art from practiced by generations of Hopi women, baskets continue to play an important cultural role in Hopi life. They are used for both ceremonial and everyday functions and are made in much the same way today as they were centuries ago.
The Hopi word for Third Mesa Basketry is "yung ya pu." The symbolism and tradition in Hopi yung ya pu designs link each unique handmade basket to other parts of Hopi life, past and present. All traditional yung ya pu designs have a name, meaning, and purpose.
