Mimbreño China
Over a thousand years ago, the Mimbreño Indians created their pottery with intricate geometric designs and whimsical depictions of the wildlife and natural surroundings they cherished. Their artistry, filled with humor and creativity, brought to life unique images such as The March Hare in the Moon, The Bird with Four Fish Stuck in Its Neck, and animals decorated with elaborate patterns. Some of these striking designs were originally found on ancient Mimbreño bowls.
Centuries later, renowned architect and designer Mary Colter drew inspiration from Mimbreño artwork to create a distinctive china pattern for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway’s elite Super Chief Two dining cars. Colter, best known for her architectural contributions to the Fred Harvey Company—including iconic Grand Canyon structures like the Hopi House, Hermit’s Rest, Lookout Studio, and Desert View Watchtower—crafted 37 unique Mimbreño-style drawings to adorn the dinnerware. Today, original Santa Fe Railway Mimbreño dinnerware is a prized collector’s item.
HF Coors, licensed by BNSF Railway, proudly produces high-quality reproductions of this historic dinnerware in the USA. These exquisite pieces, carefully matched to the black and gray Mimbreño dinnerware used at the Grand Canyon’s El Tovar Dining Room, make a wonderful addition to any collection.
Each HF Coors piece is:
- Lead-free, cadmium-free, and safe for dishwashers and microwaves.
- Ovenproof, broiler-safe, and freezer-safe.
- Designed to transition from freezer to oven, with proper room-temperature adjustment.
To protect against metal marks left by some silverware, HF Coors applies a durable "clear coat" to each Mimbreño piece. While this layer helps prevent marks, it may develop minor scratches under heavy abrasion. To preserve the finish, it is recommended to place a napkin or spacer between nested bowls and plates to prevent contact between surfaces.
Whether for dining, display, or collection, HF Coors’ Mimbreño dinnerware captures the spirit of an ancient artistic tradition while maintaining the durability and functionality of modern craftsmanship.
