Phantom Ranch is a historic oasis nestled at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, on the north side of the Colorado River, beside Bright Angel Creek. It is the only lodging below the canyon rim and can be reached only by mule, on foot, or by rafting the Colorado River.
In the 1920s, the National Park Service selected the Fred Harvey Company to develop a tourist facility within the canyon. Renowned architect Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter was commissioned to design the project, creating sketches for a series of rustic cabins. Initially, the accommodations were to be named Roosevelt’s Chalets, but upon hearing this, Colter firmly objected. Snatching up her blueprints, she declared, “Not if you are going to be using my work.” A consummate perfectionist, she had already chosen the name: Phantom Ranch.
Constructed with wood and native stone, the cabins and main lodge blend seamlessly with the canyon’s rugged beauty, making Phantom Ranch a unique and cherished retreat for adventurers.
